The No. 11 Oklahoma State women’s tennis team earned a victory Sunday night in rousing fashion.
The Cowgirls (4-0) were slow out of the gate in the doubles matches but wins of 7-5 and 6-3 gave OSU an early 1-0 edge heading into singles play.
The singles matches were when OSU started opening up a lead, due in part to the stellar play of freshmen Ayumi Miyamoto and Dariya Detkovskaya. Both Cowgirls won their singles matches handily which contributed to a 4-0 win for OSU against Oral Roberts.
Lisa Marie Rioux was another Cowgirl that played well. The Junior from Japan cruised to victory and was the first court to finish in singles, winning 6-1 and 6-0.
“We are going to have to rely on our freshmen a lot this year,” Head coach Chris Young said. “So hopefully that’s going to be something that they consistently do for us because we’re a young team. It means a lot.”
This game was the second of the day for Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls had won against the University of Central Arkansas earlier in the day, and with the win against ORU, they continued their strong start to the season.
The victory serves as confidence boost to Cowgirl freshman who have not played very many collegiate tennis matches in their careers thus far.
“I think it gives them more confidence each of these matches that they have been able to compete in,” Young said.
OSU is undefeated at home in the Mike and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
“We have a group of freshmen that came in with a lot of international experience (and) they’ve played at high levels” said Coach Young, “I think the expectation for them is high.”
