Some say the best offense is a good defense.

On Thursday night's win over Oklahoma State, SMU proved the age-old adage true.

The Mustangs defeated OSU 1-0 in a defensive battle, in large part due to the herculean effort from Goalkeeper Tatum Sutherland, who racked up 10 saves against the Cowgirls.

SMU got on the board with a header from Payton Doiron. Doiron put the ball perfectly in the top left corner, making it almost impossible for OSU Goalkeeper Evie Vitali to put a hand on it. The goal was assisted on by Courtney Sebazco, who delivered a precisely placed cross.

OSU's failure to score was not for a lack of opportunities, with 19 shots overall and 10 of them being on goal, the Cowgirls had plenty of chances to score. SMU’s ability to force OSU into tough shots was a large factor in holding the Cowgirls scoreless.

However, OSU’s leading goal scorer, Grace Yochum had a great opportunity to equalize in the 52nd minute on a sliding attempt right in front of the goal, but the Cowgirl standout put it over the top of the goal, and just like so many of OSU’s chances Thursday night, barely missed paydirt.
