It was the Cowboys’ aggressive urgency that spurred them to a 23-10 victory against Minnesota this Saturday.

The match of the night happened at 125 pounds, as No. 19 Trevor Mastrogiovanni battled Patrick McKee. Mastrogiovanni shocked the Minnesota crowd by upsetting McKee in a 10-6 regular decision victory.

Mastrogiovanni used his quick feet and ability to escape with ease to wear McKee down and keep the pressure on him to make a move. Mastrogiovanni was carefully decisive and wrestled at his own pace which allowed him to keep control throughout the match.

The upset gave the rest of the Cowboys the confidence and boost they needed the rest of the match. Mastrogiovanni set the tone and put the Cowboys up in a dual where they would retain that lead until the end.

This was a big individual performance for Mastrogiovanni and will bode well in his rankings as he dissected his No. 5 ranked opponent with ease.

“I wanted to wrestle the best,” Mastrogiovanni said earlier this week. “Knowing he was a NCAA finalist, that’s where I want to be.”
