When the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team faced Iowa State on Wednesday, it found itself in an early hole.
The Cowgirls could not recover, losing to the Cyclones 74-63.
OSU (12-10 overall, 3-7 Big 12) was never in control. After taking the lead in the opening minute, the Cowgirls lost it after 16 seconds. They would find themselves behind the rest of the way.
Vivian Gray and Natasha Mack scored 40 of the Cowgirls points, but shot 15-of-42 (good for 35.7%). Gray played every second, while Mack played 36 minutes.
The Cyclone (13-8, 5-5) starters proved too much for the Cowgirls. They scored 70 of the Cyclones points, outscoring the Cowgirls starters by 14.
Bryn Gerlich made her first start of the year for the Cowgirls. She had four points, four rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes.
ISU was led by Ashley Joens 23 points. Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw and Kristin Scott each had 18 in support. The Cyclones shot 11-of-24 from three to extend the lead to double digits before the half.
OSU lost the turnover battle 14-7, despite winning points in the paint (+10), second chance points (+2), bench points (+3) and fast break points (+9).
OSU lost to the Cyclones 64-63 in the previous meeting this season. This is the first conference opponent to sweep the Cowgirls in multiple meetings since Kansas State last season.
