The Oklahoma State equestrian team captured its first victory of the spring against TCU 14-5 on Saturday.
In their spring home opener, the No. 2 Cowgirls grabbed an early 4-1 lead in Fences. Sydnie Ziegler was named Most Outstanding Player in the event and freshman Emma Pacyna won her first event as a Cowgirl.
“It was good to see [Ziegler] raise her game up to where we know she’s capable of competing,” OSU coach Larry Sanchez said.
After a competitive event of Horsemanship, where each ride was decided by two points or less, the Cowgirls finished the first half of the meet up 7-2. Junior Harley Huff earned her third M.O.P. of the season with a narrow 76.5-75.5 victory against No. 6 TCU’s Mattie Dukes.
“Harley is incredible,” Sanchez said. “She has done nothing but improve every year that she’s been here.”
Despite Katie Schell’s second consecutive loss on the Flat, the Cowgirls (8-3 overall, 3-1 Big 12) once again controlled the event, winning 4-1. They were regularly encouraging their teammates and passionately celebrated after each ride.
“I know they have that kind of talent,” Sanchez said. “It’s awesome to see them performing at their best and enjoying themselves while they do it.”
In Reining, Hannah Mitchell retained her undefeated home record (6-0) and won her third M.O.P. of the season. Although Kristi Wiggins’s score of 70.5 was later updated as a disqualification, the Cowgirls closed the meet by defeating the Horned Frogs, 3-2, in the event.
“I went in when another girl was supposed to be showing so we got an automatic zero,” Wiggins said. “But Hannah Mithcell killed it today. She was great.”
