Brian Barnes tripped Austin Harris’ left leg.
Harris pulled back from the hold and jumped on Barnes. That minuscule motion was costly. He then jumped on Barnes’ back to win in sudden victory 5-4 against Oregon State’s Brian Barnes.
With less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Harris earned a strong takedown to get within one. Thankfully, Harris had gathered over a minute of riding time to force overtime.
“(Harris) has improved his confidence quite a bit,” coach John Smith said. “I don’t think he could’ve won this Oregon State bout a year ago being down four.”
Collectively, outside of 133 and 157-pound classes, all Cowboys finished 2-0 on the day. Oklahoma State (2-0) easily defeated Chattanooga (2-1) 32-9 and Oregon State (1-4) 29-8.
Trevor Mastrogiovanni, AJ Ferrari, and Dustin Plott — all freshmen — earned enjoyed victories in their collegiate debuts. Plott and Ferrari’s victories were in bonus point fashion.
“I was just trying to enjoy the moment,” Plott said.
After OSU’s win over Chattanooga, Smith moved to fourth on NCAA wrestling’s list of all-time victories with 441.
