Cowboys, Cowgirls come up just short, Iowa State retains Big 12 title

Oklahoma State cross-country gave Iowa State a fight until the finish but placed second on the men’s and women’s sides at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Friday in Ames, Iowa.

No. 6 Iowa State won the men’s 8K with a final score of 32. No. 23 Oklahoma State was just eight points behind at 40.

OSU had three runners in the top five. Isai Rodriguez, Ashenafi Hatte and Luis Martinez finished second, third and fourth overall. Jorge Perez and Alec Haines placed 15th and 16th to round out OSU’s top five.

No. 17 Iowa State won the women’s 6K with a score of 35. OSU came in second with a score of 52. Sinclaire Johnson, OSU’s star sophomore, was the runner-up, finishing only three seconds behind Iowa State’s Cailie Logue. Johnson clocked a personal best in the 6K in a time of 19:56.3. Each of the Cowgirls’ top-five runners placed in the top 15. Taylor Somers, Kaylee Dodd, Ariane Ballner and Grace Baker joined Johnson in that group of five.

OSU will compete Nov. 9 in Peoria, Illinois, at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
