Blog: Isaac Likekele's overlooked impact

Issac Likekele boxes out during Oklahoma State's loss to TCU on December 16, 2020, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Isaac Likekele has been on a tear this season and has been a vital part to the Oklahoma State Cowboys’ early success. The 6-foot-5 junior guard from Arlington, Texas, has been, in my opinion, the second best player on this team so far this season.

When you have such a high-profile player like Cade Cunningham it is easy to overlook other players on the team who, even when putting up great numbers, are not nearly as recognized. Likekele is a prime example of this as his numbers have been nothing short of productive, which makes him the perfect second option to Cunningham.

He has proven he does not need to score the ball as much to be effective as he is currently leading the team in rebounds and assists, putting up a solid eight rebounds a game. As a guard, that is hard to come by. His level of intensity in the paint as an undersized guard is otherworldly as he uses his strength and pure hustle to pull down that many boards.

When looking at his scoring numbers, he is second in scoring on the team with a solid 11 points per game on a phenomenal 60% shooting. This level of efficiency and shot selection is what makes Likekele so lethal.

Likekele is a coach's dream with his high level of intensity on both sides of the floor as well as his unselfishness and team-first mentality. He knows his role and does not complain while giving 100% effort anytime his number is called.

may go under the radar when it comes to national media presence, but this Cowboys team knows what he does for them every night, being the guy who is not afraid to get his hands dirty, putting the extra level of effort on the offensive and defensive end as well as everything in between. Likekele is the heart of this team and will continue to be as the season progresses.
