The holiday season is over a month away and some will be spending time with loved ones and exchanging gifts.

However, not everyone has the resources to spend the holidays this way. There are some veterans in Stillwater who are in need this holiday season, and Gamma Phi Beta is encouraging Oklahoma State students to help out through donations.

This sorority is hosting an event in hopes to spread cheer to veterans. Over 337,000 veterans are in the state, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Ashlyn Oliver is sisterhood chair for Gamma Phi Beta and the coordinator of this event for about two months.

She said an estimated number of 1,600 veterans will receive Christmas bags this holiday courtesy of Gamma Phi Beta.

Oliver said nice planning event to help others with the support of the people around her.

"It means a lot," Oliver said.

People can bring different items to help fill the holiday bags veterans. Blankets, pajama pants, white shirts, house shoes, socks, crossword puzzles, calendars, and various hygiene products ranging from shampoo to tooth brushes are being requested to put in the bags.

For those who brings something to the event or completes a bag will receive a free picture with Santa Claus.

This event will take place next Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Gamma Phi Beta.
