Students arrested for drugs

OSU and Stillwater police arrested two members of the Sigma Chi fraternity on Tuesday and are looking for another.

Grant S. Allen, 22, was arrested for possession of drugs with intent to distribute, said Capt. David Altman of the OSU Police Department.
Travis D. Gullett, 20, was arrested for obstruction, Altman said.

Last semester, OSU police began investigations into drug distribution on campus, Altman said. Tuesday, OSU officers worked with Stillwater police officers to serve arrest warrants to several people based on investigations and undercover drug buys.

“We often work together and supplement each other’s resources,” Altman said.

Two of the warrants were served without incident, Altman said.
For the third warrant, OSU police went to the Sigma Chi fraternity house because it was the address listed for Travis McKinley, 21, a member of the fraternity, Altman said.

McKinley was charged in Payne County last February with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to Oklahoma State Courts Network.

When officers arrived, they were told that McKinley didn’t live there anymore and had moved to a house on the 1800 block of west 10th street, Altman said.

Officers warned the men to keep it quiet and immediately left for the house on 10th street, Altman said. When officers arrived, there were three people at the house and police saw two men load drugs, safes and containers into three vehicles.

Police arrested Allen and Gullett at the house, Altman said.
All three men are members of the Sigma Chi fraternity, said Ival Gregory, OSU Fraternity and Sorority Affairs manager. But Gregory said he’s confident that those men were acting as individuals, not as members of the fraternity.

The Sigma Chi fraternity house could not be reached for comment.

The sigma chi fraternity has a reputation to try to uphold and they failed in this instance. Unlike other university and community organizations, they are at least partially responsible for their actions and those of their members. To attack a writer for reporting the truth is one step away from censorship. It is also crude and tarnishes the Greek system (I have to assume that most of the negative comments are from Greeks).
To “Your Worst Nightmare”, it is a matter of public record that the events reported upon actually happened, and all information within this article is true. To my knowledge, no retraction was ever printed either. So what’s the motive?

The real shame in this is that their Sigma Chi brothers did not intervene and get involved before the police got involved. It would have seemed that someone would have suspected what was going on and would have had the opportunity to do the right thing as a brother. When I say do the right thing, that does not necessarily mean call the police either… but get them help they need. Looking the other way while this type of thing happens does not speak very well for them.

One of these guys was my dealer...so NOW WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? I wonder if there are any Betas or Pikes that sell weed? That tri-Delt graduated, Marshall's keeping a low profile, and that dude that lives in Kerr sells dirt weed...dang it!

This is not a fraternity issue. College students smoke dope. College students sell dope. It's too bad what has happened to these students. Instead of worrying about the bad name this is giving to sigma chi, lets think about how unfortunate this is for the students who are facing some serious legal issues. If this was a story written simply to print an article negative about a student organization; well, then that's sad. Good luck to Allen, Gullett and Mckinley.

So what is the update on this article. Were the men in this article really charged and if so with what? What was the reason for so many search warrents, and who were they issued by? This article leaves a lot unsaid and I believe it should be retracted. I do not know any of the young men named, but believe it was used as a filler piece and printed prior to getting facts straight. Was it really OSU and Stillwater police working together? I find it hard to believe that they are going after Marijuana when there are so many other drugs being used in Oklahoma and at OSU that are more dangerous. The title made me think this was a hard core drug bust, and I was disapointed to hear that wasn't the case. I guess I would like to hear about those drugs instead!

Dear Laura Rey,
I really do not see what the boys' affiliation with Sigma Chi has to do with them selling, using, or possessing drugs. If they had been non-Greek students I am sure the article would have left out any other organization that they boys happened to be involved with. Seriously, the only credible mention of Sigma Chi in the entire article was that it was listed as a residence for one of them that didn't even live there anymore. The hidden agenda here is obvious. I guess when you write for a C grade college paper that people only pick up to check their horoscopes or to make a language notebook you have to get the papers off the shelf somehow. Congratulations you not only made the entire O'Colly look biased, you also made yourself look like an idiot.
Best wishes.

This is about as newsworthy as what pair of socks you put on this morning. If we want to read the police blotter, the records are public.

I highly doubt this is an arrest of any significance.

That was a good story. It was both factual and entertaining. I don't see what the big deal is about people, it's not like she said that Sigma Chi's were a bunch of hazing trust fund elitests now, did she? And guys, don't kid yourselves, unless you are ignorant as a brick, if there are people affiliated with your house using drugs, you know about it so don't go acting like you are all the victims because of a few "bad seeds". If you are a member of a group that has this kind of stuff going on and you have any inkling of what is going on, perhaps you might want to re-evaluate your priorities as far as who you associate with and what groups you chosse to be part of, otherwise you have already agreed to and assume the risk of being associated with those that you associate with, no?

Also, it really shows the character of a person and even an entire fraternity by how they react to a situation like this, and I'd have to say this, those of you attacking the O'Colly and its writers are not making the situation any better for yourself or the fraternity, whether you are a member or not. Perhaps apologies from the members arrested as well as a public statement from the fraternity regarding its stance on alcohol and drug abuse would help clear things up.

I'm sick of people accusing the reporter of slander. Her information came from a police officer. If the police officer is speaking to the press, his story is the truth as far as the police department knows it. The police would not be offering information if it was "false" or "slanderous." Trust me, I've worked with them and they're unusually tight lipped when it comes to releasing information.

Don't kill the messenger. I bet if this article had "from staff reports" in the byline, there would be far fewer accusations being thrown around merely because a name wouldn't have been attached.

If you're upset that your fraternity brothers got caught breaking the law, have it out with them, not the campus news source that would have reported that one of its reporters was arrested for drug possesion, if that was the story instead.

To the comment three below mine, it disgusts me that you go so far as to say that this is one of the reasons the general public holds a negative view on the Greek community...so you're saying that Greeks are the only ones that get busted for drugs? That is false. The majority of Greek organizations have strict no drug policies. The only reason the non-Greek community holds this perspective is because once the bad actions of a few make it to the headlines the whole name is destroyed. What about the thousands of dollars we raise for our philanthropies? What about the countless hours of community service we do? Did you know that the Greek overall GPA is higher than the non-Greek GPA? Like many have said, the constant references to Sigma Chi were not necessary. I am a journalism/broadcasting major so I know the "where" is important to the article, but the contant mentioning of Sigma Chi was uncalled for, that's all we're saying.

This article does read much different when you take out the Sigma Chi parts. Makes me think it wouldn't be a story if they weren't. I work at certain news outlet for a living, so I'm not speculating when I say stories like these make it print because the paper has an agenda to push.

"I lend my arms to all who say "I can!"
No shamefaced outcast ever sank so deep,
But yet might rise and be again a man!

Dost thou behold thy lost youth all aghast?
Dost reel from righteous retribution's blow?
Then turn from blotted archives of the past,
And find the futures pages white as snow.

Art thou a mourner? Rouse thee from thy spell!
Art thou a sinner? Sins may be forgiven;
Each morning gives the wings to flee from hell,
At sunrise a star to guide thy feet to heaven!"

It is disgusting that members of the Greek community would go as far as to slander Ms. Rey (as well as other staff at the O'Colly) simply for mentioning the fact that this arrest took place at the Sigma Chi fraternity and that it involved members (whether they be current or former) of the fraternity. Things like this are why many hold an increasingly negative opinion of the Greek community. People will respect the Greek community more when individuals within it become more honest and open, rather than forming "secret societies" like "ARGUS" to take over student life on campus and attacking journalists for writing FACTUAL stories about members of a fraternity being arrested for illegal actions. And yes, I do realize that not all individuals and organizations within the Greek community are like this...indeed, it is sad that there are quite a few bad apples within it.

“I want a Goddamn strong statement on marijuana, I mean one that just tears the ass out of them. You know, it’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish…. You have to face the fact that the whole problem is really the blacks. The key is to devise a system that recognizes this all while not appearing to.” — Richard M. Nixon, Former US President

The only reason marijuana is illegal in the first place is because Harry Anslinger testified before the Senate and said, "..marijuana makes white women seek sexual relations with negroes..." and also, "makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

I am not a member of Sigma Chi, but as a member of another Greek organization this seriously frustrates me. We get it, they went to the Sigma Chi house to find these guys, but that ONE reference was enough. Obviously they are Sigma Chis, there was NO need to go on about it. And to everyone saying that these guys shouldn't show their faces on campus again and all of that NONSENSE, do you think this is the only drug case Stillwater has ever had? Absolutely not. This just conveniently made it to the O'Colly and destroyed the Sigma Chi name. I can't even begin to count the number of people that get arrested every weekend for PI, MIP, DUI, etc, yet we do not say those people shouldn't show their faces on campus, but what they did is illegal as well. PLEASE think about your words before you post such outrageous stuff on these articles. And O'Colly, please make sure you're reporting is a little more respectable next time.

I understand the importance of reporting a "drug bust" in Stillwater, but this article took it to another level.

Factually accurate? This is slanderous and one-sided; it should have never made it to print. We get it, these two guys were part of a fraternity, big deal. Why did the editor approve this?

I don’t know these two men, but I read this article and was sad for them.

They should be allowed to walk on our campus, and hopefully turn their life around. Yes, lessons are learned the hard way. They made a mistake, and who are we to judge them.

It is sad to see how quickly people turned their back on our own students.

The O’Colly truly “kicked ‘em while they’re down.” Congrats.
