Sliding off an OSU parking boot from his truck and driving away with it, Cameron Wayne Sartin, OSU student, age 19, said he thought he was lucky to get it off.
“The parking boot wasn’t big enough, and it just kind of slid off,” Sartin said.
A parking employee reported seeing a student remove a parking boot from his truck, and then put it into the bed and drive off with it at about 11:40 a.m. on Oct. 22, according to an OSU Police witness statement.
Sartin returned the boot at about 12:15 p.m. the same day, according to the report.
“The only reason I took it off was because it was biting into my tire,” Sartin said. “It’s not like I had any intentions of keeping it.”

No charges were filed with the Payne County District Attorney’s office, but Sartin has a hearing through the university on Nov. 11, he said.
Steve Spradling, from OSU Parking and Transit Services, said Sartin was fortunate he did not go to jail for stealing university property.
“When police are called, if it’s a student, they have to go to student conduct,” Spradling said.
Sartin parked behind Northern Oklahoma College in resident hall parking, and as soon as he came out, he had a ticket and a boot, Sartin said.
After about four violations, if OSU Parking finds another violation, it can ticket and boot someone, Spradling said. It costs $50 to have a boot removed, but violation counts are reset every year.
“You’re not allowed to take the boot off yourself,” Spradling said. “If he had damaged the boot, he would have had to pay restitution.”
OSU Parking could just tow everybody, he said.
“We try to be more considerate,” Spradling said. “We give them the benefit of the doubt.”Payne County District Attorney’s office, but Sartin has a hearing through the university on Nov. 11, he said.
