Offutt, Barchenger declared winners

At the Student Government Association meeting Wednesday, the group’s Supreme Court certified the election results for its president and vice president. Kelly Offutt and Derek Barchenger were officially named president- and vice president-elect.

Applications for executive positions will be available Friday in the turnstile outside of the SGA office, room 040 of the Student Union.

'Lonely Planet' crew receives Full Company Award

For an instant the room was silent, his gaze had been caught by the plaque that now covers the cream-colored wall. The tiny shake in his voice and the glimmer in his eye told me before he did.

“I am so proud of this cast and crew, said Kevin Doolen, director of the “Lonely Planet.”

Reality check

Program promotes alcohol awareness across campus

On Thursday, students near Kerr-Drummond got a Reality Check.

The event, which featured the exhibition of a staged car accident, was geared to raise awareness of drunk driving and the consequences associated with it. Sharayah Carpenter, Reality Check director said if one person decides against drunk driving because of the event, then Reality Check was a success.

Realizing the bottom line on the severity of drunken driving

Did you know?

Reality Check 2010 on Thursday night was a great success. This has been an event we try to have every year. For those who didn’t make it, here’s a little background:  You attend a mock party and you observe some individuals drinking.

Drunken driving not the key to graduation

Drunken driving kills one person every 32 minutes.

The Victim’s Impact Panel of Oklahoma Inc. is a program designed to prevent drunken driving through testimonial presentations. The individuals speaking to the audience have been affected forever by fatal incidents of alcohol and vehicle operation.

Cowboys send nine to Wrestling Championships

Of the 330 athletes preparing to compete in the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Neb., nine are OSU wrestlers and all but one of those nine have earned national seeds.

Senior heavyweight Jared Rosholt and sophomore 141-pounder Jamal Parks solidified the highest seeds for the Cowboys earning the No. 2 spots in their weight classes.

The Lowe down on a champion

He ran out onto the field with his soccer jersey around his knees.

It was much too big for him.

Most four-year-old kids would have been intimidated playing with older kids, but not him. Colby Lowe wanted to compete and he wanted to win.

Now 15 years later, Lowe is a sophomore in college and a member of the OSU cross country and track teams.

Byford overcomes for the love of the game

The doctors told Megan Byford she would never play another serious game of basketball again.

She had damaged her knees enough to derail any dreams of a career in the game she loves, they said.

There was little reason for anyone to believe she should be playing basketball after four surgeries in seven years. Her right knee needed operation in 2003, followed by her left one in 2005. Both needed a tune up in 2008. The 2004 surgery to her wrist seems trivial in comparison.

A junior’s journal: foul ball

When your life is softball, like mine, losses are your obstacles to overcome.

They’re going to happen, even to the best teams. The toughest losses to overcome are the ones that you know you should have won. My team and I had one of those losses Tuesday against Tulsa.

It was just one of those games where we couldn’t get anything to click. We couldn’t pitch, we couldn’t get the hits when we needed them and we couldn’t make routine plays.

It’s hard to win a softball game that way.

OSU holds annual Pro Day

Like most other seniors, Zac Robinson and Russell Okung are spending their final semester preparing to enter the job market.

Unlike their fellow jobseekers, though, Robinson and Okung’s future employers are NFL franchises and their exams include running the 40-yard dash and doing bench presses.

On Wednesday, OSU’s departing quarterback and left tackle, along with 16 other senior Cowboys, performed in OSU’s Pro Day in one of their final chances to stand out before the draft in April.

Republicans fuss over reform

Could it be that the health care debate is finally coming to a close?

This might seem like wishful thinking, but recent developments in Congress might point to an end to this monstrous legislative battle. With the prospect of a reconciliation attempt looming ever-closer, reform seems to be approaching, as well.

Time for coffee, not tea

For many Americans, the Tea Party is seen as a fringe group.

These perceptions were solidified during the health care town hall debates last fall, where people repeatedly shouted down and drowned out any debate in an apparent attempt to stop legislation from moving forward.

What the US can learn from Brazil

In Latin America, the role of standing strong against U.S. policies has often been associated with Venezuela for the last decade or so.

However, in recent months, Brazil has assumed this mantle, refusing to support the United States’ campaign for the U.N. to apply further sanctions against Iran, and just this week threatening trade sanctions of its own on the U.S. in response to its cotton subsidy program.
