OSU's Dakota Geer vs Utah Valley's Will Sumner during the preliminary round of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship at the BOK Center in Tulsa on Saturday, March 9.

Despite missing several starters, the Oklahoma State wrestling team dominated its first dual of the season and defeated Drexel 30-6.

The Cowboys had four wrestlers who made their first dual appearances Friday night.

Reece Witcraft was the first Cowboy to make his debut. He struggled from the beginning as he gave up a takedown in the first period and never recovered.

Despite the loss, Witcraft has shown promise this season and likely will remain the starter for OSU at 133 pounds.

Travis Wittlake was the next Cowboy wrestler to make his debut at 165.

Wittlake faced No. 10 Ebed Jarrell, Drexel’s only ranked wrestler, and did not disappoint.

Wittlake got a takedown in each of the first two periods and rode out the match to pick up his first career dual victory, 5-1.

In a somewhat surprising manner, Anthony Montalvo made the start at 184 pounds for OSU.

Montalvo dominated his matchup from start-to-finish, winning via major decision, 13-3.

Reigning All-American Dakota Geer was expected to start at 184, but instead was bumped up to 197 as Alex Kauffman was previously suspended for the dual.

Austin Harris also made his dual debut in place for Neal Putnam.

Harris and Drexel’s Sean O’Malley struggled to get anything going. O’Malley got the only takedown of the match and Harris lost 2-1.

The Cowboys had better fitness than Drexel, which is something Coach John Smith preached in the offseason.

“I thought our conditioning level has been pretty good,” Smith said earlier this week. “Out-scoring our opponents in the third (period) is something we want to see.”

In several of the matches, OSU pulled away from its opponents in the third period, seemingly because of the conditioning level of the two teams.
