While the Oklahoma State softball team's bats got hot early, the defense down the stretch helped proved key.
The Cowgirls won their series-sweeping game against Kansas 7-3 on Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium.
In the first inning, Sydney Pennington started the scoring after she hit a double that drove in Samantha Show.
Mady Lohman then smashed the ball over the left center wall for a two-run home run. OSU (29-11, 7-2 Big 12) quickly found itself up 3-0.
Kansas (14-24, 2-4 Big 12) did not go away quietly.
In the top of the third, The Jayhawks had the bases loaded.
KU drove in three runs after a hit-by-pitch and a two out double.
The Jayhawks did not capitalize with two runners on base and left them stranded and tied at 3-3.
Following the Jayhawks top half of the inning, No. 16 OSU loaded the bases.
With two outs, Kiley Naomi recorded an infield hit to retake the lead.
The bats didn’t cool down as the Cowgirls scored in each of the first five innings.
In the fifth inning, Rylee Bayless capped off the scoring with a solo home run to put the Cowgirls up 7-3.
A four-run lead in the seventh inning gave the Cowgirls some cushion, but KU had one last run.
With two outs and runners on second and third, an infield hit from KU second baseman Miranda Rodriguez, loaded the bases.
Samantha Clakley, OSU’s pitcher, got the final out of the game after Macy Omli, a pitch hitter, grounded out to third base.
OSU will take on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, next weekend.
