Player statuses
Coach Mike Gundy commented on the status of junior defensive end Jamie Blatnick and junior safety Victor Johnson at OSU's Media Day on Monday.
"From a legal standpoint, Jamie's situation has changed and I'm still gathering information on Victor's situation," Gundy said. "I am pretty up-to-date on where we're at with Jamie. We will have discussions with Jamie this week and then make the decisions about his options for Saturday. I still want to gather all the information before I make a final decision on Victor."
On Aug. 1, Blatnick was accused of hitting former teammate Steve Denning in the face with a beer bottle. On Friday, Blatnick pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of assault and battery and will receive a deferred sentence, according to Payne County Court documents.
Johnson has pleaded not guilty on a charge for DUI, and was also charged with marijuana possession and obstructing an OSU police officer while his apartment was being searched.
A changing role
Gundy expressed optimism about what his role would be during the games this season.
"I will be listening to both sides of the ball and being involved with special teams," Gundy said. "I thought the other day about how it would actually factor in on decisions. Because I was calling plays (last season), I was tied in pretty good with third and fourth down calls. I can contribute more to the special teams area and give me more time to think about that prior to a certain group going on the field."
Faith in Weeden
Gundy said he is confident in junior quarterback Brandon Weeden, but said he will get a better idea of the 26-year-old former minor league baseball player once he has played in a few games.
"He's making good decisions at this point," Gundy said. "The question came up this morning about how much we'll know about our younger players after they've played several games, and a little bit of fatigue sets in. When the guys get beat up a little bit, you find out a lot more about your team."
