In the United States, more than 400,000 people die every year from tobacco-related causes, according to The Truth’s Web site.
With 25.7 percent of college students smoking, OSU is taking steps in decreasing these statistics.
OSU became a tobacco-free campus on July 1, 2008.. There are several “Breath Easy” and “Tobacco-Free Campus” signs around campus that show the use of tobacco is not authorized.
Although OSU is a tobacco-free campus, several police reports have cited students smoking on campus.
For those wanting to quit, Yvon Fils-Aime, tobacco health educator at the Seretean Wellness Center, provides resources to students with and without health insurance.
“The OSU Tobacco Use Prevention Program offers free cessation medications to students without health insurance,” Fils-Aime said.
“We also negotiated with the Student Health Insurance to cover medications for our students who are under the Student Health Insurance. With eight staff physicians and PAs, no appointment is needed if a student wants to get a prescription to quit.”
Fils-Aime said there is no limit in the medications they would like to select between them and their physician.
The Psychology Clinic and the Seretean Wellness Center are working together to help tobacco users quit. According the Seretean Wellness Center’s Web site, they provide Free Tobacco Quit Kits to OSU faculty, staff and students.
The Quit Kits include pamphlets on ways to quit, a tobacco use diary, flavored toothpicks to use in place of a cigarette, gum and a 2 GB memory stick.
“The Quit Kits are designed to assist with Tobacco Cessation and contain a variety of helpful tools and information for those who are trying to kick the habit,” according to Seretean Wellness Center’s Web site.
Faculty and staff can pick up the kits at the Seretean Wellness Center, and student kits are available at University Health Services.
Along with the kits, The Seretean Wellness Center offers SmokeStopper classes the first Monday of each month at 5:15 p.m., according to the OSU Tobacco Stops Here Web site.
SmokeStoppers is a nationally known program designed to help people quit smoking.
