Local band P.S. Conductor has been hard at the grindstone the last couple months. The Stillwater three-piece prides themselves on its positive attitude as a band and its no free-rides mentality.
I recently sat in on one of the band’s laid-back practices and had a chance to talk to its members, to achieve insight into the inner workings of a band that has been whole for a mere two months and has already had a successful tour through the Southwest — a difficult feat for any band to accomplish with no record label backing them.
Everything this band has accomplished has been from the members putting in the time and money to make things work; they haven’t waited for anyone to hand them an easy way out.
The band began as a solo project featuring Brett Johnson playing acoustic guitar and singing in his one bedroom duplex. Johnson has been playing music in local bands since age 15 and has worked to progress both his vocal and guitar playing abilities, trying to find the sound that he can really put his heart and soul into.
“I play music for the sake of originality, not for the sake of getting attention in any way possible by creating generic, cookie-cutter music,” Johnson said. “I want P.S. Conductor to be recognized for the hard work that’s been put into it by its members, not for how many friends we have on MySpace.”
Johnson recorded the band’s debut EP, “...Is A Tool,” and soon after was joined by long time friend and former bandmate Phillip Garner on bass. Shortly after Philip’s joining, the duo picked up good friend Kelcyn Griffith, former drummer of Envy the Enemy, another local band.
“We’re like three peas in a pod,” said Garner. “Kelcyn was the third leg to our tripod. He was exactly what we needed.”
P.S. Conductor plans to record a full-length album and have it in stores by fall of 2010 and is well on its way to achieving that goal. The trio also plan to tour the Midwest after completing and fine-tuning its new set list, and to record a video for its new song, “Daniel, Daniel, Daniel” — which is certain to get your feet moving.
