Online History

With its beginning in 1995 by Jenny Archer as a student honors program project, the www.ocolly.com was officially placed on the World Wide Web at the beginning of the 1996 Fall Semester. Local content of all Daily O’Collegian print editions since that time have been archived and can be found on this website.

From its inception, continuing development of the not-for-profit www.ocolly.com site has been guided by students interested in electronic publishing. A student organizing group chose the ocolly online web name to differentiate it from the printed Daily O’Collegian, although virtually all of the local news, information and entertainment online content is provided from Daily O’Collegian printed editions.

Initially launched with computers, software and a server purchased by the Daily O’Collegian, the ocolly online quickly became self-supporting and remains so today.

Over the years, there have been two major site redesigns, the first being soon after the initial www.ocolly.com site launching. The last redesign, placed online with the beginning of the 2005 Fall Semester, essentially was a joint effort of three students: Jared Janes, Michael Curtis and Anshuman Anand.

Anand, an International electrical engineering grad student from India, was the chief technical expert and a major redesign contributor. Janes was a former editor in chief of the Daily O’Collegian printed editions, a journalism news-editorial major, and the site’s first web editor. Curtis was a computer engineering major, the webmaster, and O’Collegian computer systems administrator.

Like Daily O’Collegian print editions, the ocolly online maintains a paid, all-student part-time sales and technical staff supported by the O’Collegian’s business office for fiscal functions, and the general manager as adviser.
