The Stillwater Police Department as well as the Payne County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an individual carrying what appeared to be a pistol in front of Lincoln Alternative Academy at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The school was placed on lockdown while officers searched the area. Once the school was cleared, officers began moving door-to-door at residences in the area until they located the suspect, according to a media release.

The individual was positively identified as the one carrying the firearm and was taken into custody for questioning.

"It was determined that the weapon seen was in fact an Airsoft-type facsimile firearm capable of only firing small plastic pellets," according to the release. "The pistol was seized as evidence but the subject was released after questioning."

The school was reopened after officers clarified the situation. The case will be presented to the Payne County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether charges will be filed, after police conclude their investigation.
