The associate provost of undergraduate education has been selected as interim provost and senior vice president while Oklahoma State University searches for a permanent replacement.
Pam Fry will begin her temporary position July 1, according to a news release sent from OSU President Burns Hargis on Friday. The current provost and senior vice president, Robert Sternberg, was selected as the 24th president of the University of Wyoming and will begin his position that day.
“It will be an honor and a privilege to serve in the interim provost position at OSU, especially under the leadership of President Hargis,” Fry said Sunday.
Fry will continue initiatives Sternberg started during his run as provost, such as several key task force recommendations related to academic affairs, she said.
Fry’s interim position will allow OSU more time to find a suitable replacement for Sternberg.
“We soon will be seeking suggested nominations for the search and screening committee to conduct a very thorough and careful national search for the next provost for OSU,” Hargis said in the news release.
This is Fry’s 24th year in Oklahoma higher education, she said. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and her doctorate’s degree at OSU in 1989. She went on to become a faculty member and administrator at OU for 12 years. In 2001, she was hired as head of the School of Teaching and Curriculum Studies at OSU. She was promoted to dean of the College of Education in 2005 and became associate provost and associate vice president of undergraduate education in the OSU Office of Academic Affairs in 2011.
Fry said she believes her experience will enable her to succeed in her new role.
“These roles have given me essential experiences related to supporting students, faculty and staff success,” she said.
Fry will return to her position as associate provost and associate vice president for undergraduate education once a new provost is chosen, she said.
During the next few weeks, Fry said she will work with Sternberg to identify a person to serve as interim associate provost in her stead.
“Fortunately, we have a number of individuals at OSU who could be considered for the position,” she said.
