In July of this year Oklahoma State University announced changes to its School of Journalism and Broadcasting. Prior to July, Oklahoma State offered only one bachelor's degree program in the field.
Dr. Derina Holtzhausen, director of the School of Media and Strategic Communication, said the school is now offering more specialized degrees.
"Everyone who graduated (prior to the alteration) got a degree in journalism and broadcasting," Holtzhausen said. "We have changed it to train students more specifically. We now have a degree in Strategic Communications, Broadcasting and Sports Media."
In addition to creating more degree options with classes specific to those areas, the core curriculum was reworked to provide a more complete foundation for communications students.
"It used to be Style and Structure, Media and Society, and Media Law," Holtzhausen said. "Now we have those three but we have changed Media and Society to Media and Diverse Society and we have added 2 new courses, Electronic Communication which introduces students to electronic communication as it pertains to strategic communication using all social media and a new course in media ethics."
After restructuring the core curriculum, the Journalism and Broadcasting faculty reworked existing classes to reflect current trends and developments in the communications fields.
"We made sure that there is a strong multimedia degree component. It is a very important component," Holtzhausen said.
