New school spirit song gets mixed reviews

When I think of the first football game of the season, I think of that feeling of anticipation, the opening kickoff and especially the opening video montage.

The news from the athletic department is that John Martin, a Baylor graduate and son of OSU associate athletic director Dave Martin, was hired to compose a new spirit song for OSU.

The song Martin came up with is “Cowboys Forever.”

Martin says in his blog, Johnmartinlive.com, he was hired in April to oversee the production of the 2009 OSU football pre-game video.  After extensive research on Frank Eaton, the inspiration for Pistol Pete, Martin wrote the song “Cowboys Forever,” according to his Web site.

Martin said he and Director Taylor Bolding were given full access to the players and their summer workout sessions. He said his favorite part of the video is watching junior receiver Dez Bryant race Bullet.

As awesome as watching Dez Bryant race a horse sounds, the song that Martin wrote is proportionally as bad.

Listening to “Cowboys Forever” made me feel lame. I have never heard a song that represents the way I feel about myself or my school, and I wish this one was not it. The cheesy lyrics in this song are plain overwhelming.

“The prairie wind touches our skin, another maverick morning begins.”

I guess that prairie wind is just not what comes to mind when I am walking down the Strip to eat at Coney Island and the most “maverick” thing I experience during the week is riding my bike on the sidewalk.

“In Bedlam we will rise and stand, with strength and honor to defend our land.”

The Cowboys might defend with honor, but the Bedlam football series is one of the most lopsided in-state rivalries in the nation. Martin should consider our land pillaged.

I understand that I may be picky, so I asked my fellow Cowboys about their thoughts regarding the song.

Andy Guthrie, a history senior, said while he doesn’t mind the song, he doesn’t think it’s football material.

“It was OK,” Guthrie said. “I don’t think it would really work at a football game. It’s not very spirited. It’s just not very energetic -- it’s sorta slow and really long.”

JJ Mitchell, a music freshman, said he enjoyed the song and thinks it’s just what the school needs.

“I thought the song sounded good,” Mitchell said. “The lyrics I liked too, it sounds like a good chant song and I think it will fire up the crowd.”

But I think freshman entrepreneurship freshman, Jeb Shadid said it best.

“I am in a worse mood now after hearing that song,” Shadid said. “That song wouldn’t pump me up for a football game at all.”

Dave Martin was unable to be reached to discuss the matter.

Many fans have expressed displeasure on message boards and social networks at the thought of the song being used for the intro video.

A group on Facebook.com named “Stop Cowboys 4ever Now” already has nearly 100 members. The athletic department has not confirmed whether it will actually be used for the video.

On a May, 3 blog entry on Martin’s Web site, he wrote “My thoughts about working with a producer began stirring in my mind when I was hired by Oklahoma State University to oversee the production of the 2009 football team entrance video, which I would also write a song for.”

If this song is used in the pregame media mix, I would be fine because nobody would be in the stadium.

On the other hand, everybody pays attention to the actual video, including the people we are trying to intimidate.

I'm embarrased by this song and really wish that it wasn't the first thing people hear when they come to our new awesome stadium. Lets keep all the gay stuff in norman where it belongs. We really dropped the ball on this! This song reminds me of holding hands with a dude and walking threw a dewy meadow, not getting ready to watch the greatest football team in the nation kill whoever is in stillwater on that paticular saturday. Frank Eaton is probably rolling over in his grave.

I guess the next step is to replace Pistol Pete and Bullet with 'RAINDOW BRIGHT' and a 'MY LITTLE PONY'. This song has a place alright......in the GARBAGE! I wouldn't play this song before any game of any sport. It shouldn't even be played at an equestrian event. I really do wish this was a joke.

This song should never be played at a Cowboys event!! Boomer Sooner would get the crowd more fired up than this song! Scrap it and go with something else.

I am neither an OSU alum nor fan--I heard about this story from Deadspin. I feel sorry for y'all, as this is among the five worst song I have ever heard. From SEC country my heart goes out to Cowboys everywhere. (Your football coach is an idiot, too.)

I can't imagine how the son of the AD was hired to write this crap.

This song is a disappointment. OK State has a wonderful opportunity to prove what a wonderful football team they can have this year. It is sad that there has to be controversy because someone hired their son (CONFLICT). Garth Brooks is going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the homecoming game, maybe he will surprise everyone with a new song as a gift. I bet the stands will be singing "SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COWBOY" before the end of the first quarter. At least Toby can admit he went to the wrong UNIVERSITY in a song. GO POKES!!!!

Simply put, the songs sucks. As an alumnus of OSU I am appalled that they would use this song at a COWBOY football game. The only COWBOY that will be humming this tune lives on Brokeback Mountain......

It sounds okay I like the lyrics, but for a pregame song its weak. Do they got anything else maybe something that screams football

Conflict of interest anyone? That moron should be fired!

We googled the song and listened. We then came to the verdict that we don't like the song at all. The song resembles the ugly, mongoloid offspring of Cold Play, Kings of Leon, and Tim McGraw. Not only do we believe it belongs on the next installment of Kids Bop, but we find it entirely inadequate to precede anything related to Cowboy football. We as students and avid fans are ashamed that our football program is associated with this song and we would rather listen to a sack full of kittens being murdered than to participate or sing along if Cowboys Forever is played anywhere near Boone Pickens Stadium.

This song has its place but that place isn't at a sporting event or any other location where people over 16 years old gather. This song is way too cheesy and suited better for recruiting elementary kids in the bounce houses outside the stadium on Hall of Fame rather than firing up buzzed college students waiting to see Georgia get their heads smashed into the turf.

"i bet garth brooks could write and sing a song that would fire even the sober ones up"

Maybe he could, but let's be honest with ourselves here...Garth really didn't write any of his hits.

Here he is talking about his songwriting prowess...or lack there of.

“I don’t know man, there’s Max D. Barnes and Don Schlitz and guys like Tony Arata and Pat Alger. Those guys are songwriters. I just happen to be somebody that sings who also happens to work a little bit with a pen. I found out if you surround yourself with those people, for some reason they call you a songwriter too, but all of those guys are definitely writers.” Brooks explains co-writing has proven to work best for him.

In response to all of you that think Garth Brooks should have written the song, I doubt he would. Ever since he donated money to the University and they redirected it away from where he wanted it to go, he hasn't had much association with any OSU entity.

I'm an alum and haven't missed a home game in 18 years, hold both my undergrad and masters from OSU.

And in this cowboy's opinion, this song is just terrible. I would rather have them play boomer fricken sooner than to hear this crap.

I don't know his son, but Dave Martin himself is a complete jerk, and the last thing I think should have happened is to let his Baylor Bear kid write up a song that is suppose to get the blood flowing of the OSU faithful.

I really hope my Alumni Association, Foundation, and Posse club donations didn't go to towards the funding of this steamy turd.

Actually, I heard on Triple Play Sports Radio (105.5 FM) this morning that this guy did go over to Garth Brooks' house and play the song for him. He didn't say in the interview what Garth Brooks thought of the song... I don't understand what the appeal is of this song. I would listen to it in the car, but not as a way to get pumped up for a football game. Very suspicious that the son of the Asst-AD was hired to do this...

This song is ridiculous at best for football. I really hope that they don't play this within 20 minutes of kickoff, let alone during the video. This does not represent OSU, it's fan base, or it's alumni. I have no clue why this would be the song chosen...or why Mr Martin's son was picked to do the song. I think that we need to start a petition to get this scratched....this song will bring much ridicule from opposing fans and OSU fans alike. Boo to you Mr. Martin and staff!
