With hits from Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, Jonas Brothers and Tyler the Creator, this past summer proved to be about the music.
The summer of 2019 started with Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road leading the Billboard Top 100 and stayed that way for a while. This streak continued for 19 consecutive weeks, a record-breaking amount of time. While this dominated the top spot of the charts, there was a vast amount of summer anthems that became a crucial part of the summer’s music
Sucker by the Jonas Brothers was an early standout. Released in late spring, this song had a constant presence over the summer. This was the single for their long awaited reunion album, Happiness Begins. Despite a 10 year hiatus, the brothers showed they hadn’t lost their ability to create radio anthems.
Chance the Rapper and Taylor Swift both released albums full of carefree summer songs. Chance’s Hot Shower became an instant hit with fans. Assisted by DaBaby, who also had a huge breakout this summer, the song broke into the Billboard Top 100. Meanwhile, Swift’s Lover became the #1 album in the country with anthems like ME!
However, this summer wasn’t just upbeat bangers. Tyler the Creator’s latest album IGOR debuted at #1 in early June, providing an album of heartbreak to fill the summer. The lush and experimental tracks EARFQUAKE and NEW MAGIC WAND became hits and gave the summer some depth of emotion.
Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? maintained constant rotation over the summer. Despite a 2018 release, the 17 year old sensation’s song Bad Guy eventually peaked at #1 on the Billboard and dethroned Old Town Road.
Lizzo found her spot in the limelight this summer. With her song Truth Hurts, an anthem of self worth, she saw the gradual rise to the #1 spot on the Billboard. The song was released two years prior, this song shined over the summer. With an exciting VMA performance at the end of the summer, Lizzo seems to be gaining traction.
The true break out of the summer was Megan Thee Stallion. Releasing her debut album Fever at the beginning of the summer, her now trademarked phrase ‘hot girl summer’ was impossible to miss this summer. Hits like Realer and a feature on XXL’s 2019 Freshman list lifted her up the charts and into everyone’s playlist.
Drake made sure to maintain his everlasting presence in the music industry by releasing a compilation of loosies, or tracks that never got official releases priorly, in an album titled Care Package. Despite every song on the album being heard before, it still went #1 and proved Drake is still a heavyweight in the game.
Young Thug closed out the summer with his latest project, So Much Fun. The title not only describes album, but does a great job at encapsulating the feeling this summer gave. With every summer comes a new round of anthems that play on for years and if there’s any way to describe summer ‘19, it’s so much fun.
