Review: 'Nuthin' 2 Prove' shows Lil Yachty's improvement

Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty released newest project "Nuthin' 2 Prove," Oct. 19, 2018.

Seven months after the release of “Lil Boat 2,” Lil Yachty is back with his third studio album “Nuthin’ 2 Prove.”

Yachty gained his popularity in late 2015 when a viral YouTube video featured his song “One Night.” Since then, that song has over 46 million plays on the music service SoundCloud and has reached certified platinum.

“Nuthin’ 2 Prove” has 15 songs with a runtime of 47 minutes and features hip-hop superstars like Cardi B, Juice WRLD, Kevin Gates, Offset and many others.

The first half of the album is Yachty rapping hard and the last half is Yachty mellowing out to a smooth pace. “Nuthin’ 2 Prove” opens with “Gimmie My Respect” and we hear a very bass-heavy beat and Yachty attempting to get respect from people as a professional rapper.

The second song, “Get Dripped” is when we hear the first featured artist, Playboi Carti. This song makes it the third time Yachty and Carti worked together. This song is the two of them bragging how much money they have with luxurious brands that they show off.

The ninth song, “Worth it” is where fans hear the album take on a more mellow tone and the beat is slower than the first half. The song talks about a woman who does not think she is perfect, but Yachty disagrees saying “I think you fine though, you gon’ be a 10 either way.”

Also on this album, includes the lead single “Who Want the Smoke,” featuring married hip-hop artists Cardi B and Offset. This single was released a week before the album came out as a tease for Yachty fans. The song consists of Cardi B claiming that she is the king of New York.

Although this was hands down the best Yachty album so far, it was still not the best he could do. Yachty has shown on this album that he has improved greatly as an artist but is still a long way from being a hip-hop superstar.

Yachty as of right now is at his best when he is featured on individual songs by other artists. This album, however, will be his last album before hitting the road for “The Disrespect Tour.” The tour will be held in 23 different cities across the United States and will feature upcoming female hip-hop artist Bhad Bhabie, whom is most known for her single, “Gucci Flip Flops,” featuring Yachty.
