Condoleezza Rice is stepping onto the Oklahoma State University campus Thursday to broaden students’ minds about politics and foreign affairs.

Rice is speaking from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tickets are free to OSU students, faculty and staff or $15 for general admission. The tickets are available at the Hub in the Student Union or at www.rice.okstate.edu.

Rice served under President George W. Bush as Security of State from 2005 to 2008. According to the U.S. Department of State Web site,
www.state.gov/secretary, Rice has a doctorate in political science and was a professor of political science for Stanford University throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

From 1989 to 1990, she took a break from teaching to become the director of Soviet and East European Affairs on the National Security Council, returning to Stanford in 1990. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed her as National Security Advisor. Then in 2005, she succeeded Colin Powell as Secretary of State, becoming the first African American woman to hold the position.

“There will be a question and answer time where Rice will take questions from the audience,” said Stacey Brandhorst, a public relations and Spanish major and chair of the Speaker’s Board. “Rice will address her part of the Bush Administration.”

Rice is coming as part of OSU’s Global Briefing Series, cosponsored by the Spears School of Business, the OSU President’s Speaker Series, the School of International Studies and SGA’s Speakers Board.

Students are ecstatic that OSU is bringing in such a prestigious speaker. Natalie Coleman, a psychology junior, explained why she has tickets to this event.

“Part of being in college is about opportunity. And for OSU to give us the opportunity to listen to some of the prominent leaders of our nation is an experience I do not want to miss.”

Greg Thompson, a finance freshman, also explained his reasons for going to hear Rice.

“I want to learn reasons behind the decisions this country makes from one of the most accomplished and knowledgeable foreign policy leaders of our time.”
