In the coming weeks, men and women from the freshmen pledge classes will be preparing for Freshmen Follies 2010. The long-standing OSU tradition is a performance characterized by singing, dancing and high-energy animation.
"It's incredibly entertaining and it's a high quality show. I think it's amazing what these chapters come up with and how talented our freshmen are," said Courtney Skaer, co-executive follies director.
Follies is a time for freshmen to connect with greek life.
"It's something that their whole chapter is cheering them on with and it's something (they) can have pride in," Skaer said.
Fraternities and sororities pair in late spring to begin planning the fall show. The casts try-out for the show Sept. 19-20. Those making it through auditions then compete in the final follies production.
The strong competition demands creativity from chapter directors. Popular songs are rearranged and personalized to follow an original storyline. Choreography is designed to be energetic and to showcase individual talents.
"We want something that captivates the audience," said Lauren Colpitts, a Kappa Kappa Gamma follies director.
During cast try-outs, directors look for freshmen who are vocally gifted, sharp dancers and who have good attitudes, said Landon Wilson, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon follies director.
It is a large time commitment, but most agree that the time is well spent.
"You learn how to manage your time and you meet a whole bunch of friends," Wilson said.
Erin Ritchie, a member of Alpha Chi Omega's cast, is looking forward to making her mark.
"I like being goofy and being around people," Ritchie said. "I'm not afraid to make fun of myself and I want to make connections with each [chapter]. I'm really excited to develop those relationships."
The Follies performances will be Nov. 4-6 in the Stillwater High School Performing Arts Center. Contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs for more information.
