Stillwater fireman rushes to the scene of the laundry room fire.

Student were evacuated from the Student Union on Friday when the lint in a dryer caught fire in the Atherton Hotel basement and set off the building’s alarm system.

Lint was caught in the dryer, which wasn’t on, said David Davis, Atherton Hotel general manager. “Sometimes lint can get caught in different places. It’s being cleaned up right now. It was mostly just smoke.”

The damage was less than $500 and fire damage was limited to the dryer, said Floyd Cobb, OSU fire marshal.

Stillwater firefighters had to break a window to let the air in the room out, said Rick Rogers, one of the first firefighters on the scene.

When firefighters got there, there was nothing but black coals, so they pulled the ash out and used a water extinguisher on it, Rogers said.
