Tonight, residents and students alike will prepare to feel the rumble of the Malaysian 24 Seasons Drum Troupe.

At 7 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Seretean Center, the Malaysian 24 Seasons Drum Troupe will perform an interactive show of new acts of synchronized drumming.

Ben Loh, president of the drum troupe, said the audience can look forward to a night of performances, a steady beating of drums and a video about the troupe’s experiences as a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds.

“(The audience) is going to have a whole new experience,” Loh said. “They’re not going to just see the show; they’re going to feel the show.”

For the first time, the troupe is adding something new to the traditional sounds of the Malaysian drums by infusing Japanese and Thai rhythms.

Through the incorporation of Malaysia, Japan and Thailand sounds, Loh said he expects the audience to walk away with the understanding that even though everyone has a different background, they can still work together as a team regardless.

“We hope the audience will get the excitement from our energy,” he said. “And to know more about how different nationalities, different ethnic groups work together. That’s the main message from drum night.”

The troupe performs at least four times a month for OSU-area clubs and non-profit organizations like the American Cancer Society.

These performances spawned the idea for the troupe to hold an event of its own that it can share with everyone at OSU and in Stillwater.

Loh said drum night is a way for Stillwater residents to show the troupe their support.

“Drum night is a way to let us know how many supporters we have out there,” he said. “And that will really cheer us up, knowing that people really do know us. That’s the biggest inspiration for us to work on this.”
