Stillwater band DEERPEOPLE played two of their newest songs for "on." The videos are now online, with a band interview. DEERPEOPLE will play a free house-concert Friday night

An alien crash-lands in Perry, makes a deal with God and turns into a boxer-shepherd mix that ends up in a Stillwater living room biting a hole in my shoe.

Most of that was the fictional story of Ulysses, the four-legged main character from DEERPEOPLE’s unreleased first concept album.

Ulysses lives with DEERPEOPLE frontman Brennan Barnes, who tells the story best. It takes more than 10 minutes to hear even the abridged version, but it’s worth it.

“(With a concept) you have a guide for the emotion of a song,” said Barnes. “With hardcore bands everything is the same format.”

Barnes said the band’s newest material is a continuation of Ulysses’ story.

These songs rarely have the same format. They range from insanely catchy dance tunes and explosions of rap to sing-a-longs about Jesus Christ.

The Stillwater-based rock group has been around for a couple years and has grown since the first album, and it played a pair of its newest tunes inside a cramped kitchen.

After hearing these songs, let’s hope Ulysses holds out for a couple more sequels.
