The OSU's men golf team has won two of its three tournaments of the fall season, but they know they are better than that.
"The best part about it is we know we can play better," coach Mike McGraw said. "There is room for improvement."
The Cowboys said they are heading into their last tournament of the fall and expecting a third victory.
"It's always nice to finish on a good note," sophomore Peter Uihlein said. "It helps us build confidence for the spring."
Personally, Uihlein is on a good note, as well. In September, he was Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month, The Big 12 Golfer of the Month and captured the individual title at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational.
The most impressive on his list of achievements is his current No. 1 ranking in the country on Golfweek.com. The team as a whole also holds the No. 1 ranking.
"I'm playing with confidence, and just playing well," Uihlein said. "Golf is humbling to the point where you can struggle and still do well. My bad rounds have still been pretty good and when I've played well I've played really well."
McGraw said he is impressed with Uihlein's performance and said he is doing his part by doing virtually nothing.
"I'm just staying out of his way so he can keep on building momentum and confidence," McGraw said.
The Cowboys will tee off on Monday at the Courde Valle Invitational in Gilroy, Calif.
This tournament, however, will be unlike what the Cowboys have yet experienced. The format is entirely different, which is exciting to the team, Uihlein said.
"We're bringing six players and counting five, instead of five for four," Uihlein said. "We get to show the country our depth because we have a lot of good players. The six of us will play with a teammate and we ride carts for 18 holes, so that's nice that we won't have to walk; and we play with two other teams."
The Cowboys said they are excited for the change of pace, but said they won't let it distract them from their goal of winning their third and final tournament of the fall season.
