Alice in Wonderland

Letter from the editor

This weekend, Disney’s new 3D adventure, a retelling of Lewis Caroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland,” broke records with its $116 million opening weekend haul, beating “Avatar” for the largest 3D opening on record.

“Alice in Wonderland” took in an additional $94 million overseas, bringing its total to $210.3 million.

Apparently, moviegoers — male and female — were more than eager to see a young Alice battle and defeat a giant Jabberwocky, turn down an arranged marriage and hang out with Johnny Depp.

Is this the message we want to send our young daughters, that they can be anything they want to be, including married to a man of their liking and choosing? That they can even defeat a Jabberwocky?

I’d imagine so; I’d imagine that’s what many O’Colly readers would tell their sisters, their daughters and the women in their lives.

As the Forum Editor, I ran Ashley Reynolds’ column on feminism because I know many students on campus share her view.

Today, columnist Karen Sisk offers her response to Reynolds’ conservative perspective. I know many students share Sisk’s view, as well.

I’d like to see this conversation continue respectfully.  I’d like readers to look past political rhetoric to the real issue here — women.

Oklahoma has the highest female incarceration rate in the U.S. In 2007, 23,400 domestic abuse incidents were reported to the police. Oklahoma is No. 7 nationally for the number of women murdered by men; the state ranks in the top 10 states for teen birth rates.

Oklahoma women deserve better. We owe them as much.
